Diamond Journalism Awards

After a three-year absence from the journalism contest field, the Arkansas Pro Chapter of SPJ returns this summer with the Diamond Journalism Awards.

This is a brand new contest, not just a revival, with more categories and a broader reach.

Taking its name from one of Arkansas’ identities — the Diamond State — the Diamond Journalism Awards will recognize outstanding journalism by professionals and students regardless of format, not just from Arkansas but beyond its borders.

The contest covers work published or broadcast between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016.

You’ll be able to start submitting entries July 1. Entry deadline will be July 27.

More details in a few days.

Can’t We All Get Along?

Let’s foster better relations between the media and the spokesmen/women for the agencies we cover!

We all have those stories — “The PIO never got back to me!” or “That reporter misquoted me!”

Can’t we all get along?

Sometimes it seems like we can’t. Let’s get together and hear from both sides.

What works well and what doesn’t? What do you wish that spokesman would do to make your job as a reporter better? Spokesmen, what do you wish reporters would realize about what you do?

There will be a panel discussion, but most of the session will be an open discussion with everyone in attendance.

Journalists and PIOs are invited to this important discussion!

Panelists include:
* Bill Sadler, Arkansas State Police
* Jennifer Godwin, City of Little Rock
* Amy Webb, Department of Human Services
* Steven McClanahan, Little Rock Police Department
* Fredricka Sharkey, University of Central Arkansas
* Benjamin Hardy, Arkansas Times,
* Drew Petrimoulx, KARK
* Claudia Lauer, The Associated Press

New Arkansas Pro officers

Greetings!

The board of directors of the Arkansas Pro Chapter held a telephone meeting last week to elect a replacement for Eric Francis, who had resigned after two years in office. Kelly Kissel was elected the new president, and stepped down from his office of treasurer. Sarah Morris was elected treasurer and, so long as there is no conflict in the bylaws, will keep her current post as secretary. John Lyon carries on as vice-president.

It’s been a pleasure serving Arkansas Pro as its president and I look forward to helping Kelly and the board do many great things with our chapter!

Boston Globe accepting 2015 intern applications

The following internship information is hot off the e-mail:

As the recruiter for The Boston Globe newsroom, I’m excited to tell you about our 2015 summer internship program, and ask you to share this information with the students in your chapter.

The Boston Globe runs one of the top programs in the nation, giving 11 interns the opportunity to work as reporters, or as a photographer, designer or copy editor.

The 12-week paid internship places reporter-interns in our Metro, Business, Living/Arts, Health/Science and Sports departments; the photo intern shoots stills and video for all sections, the design intern creates sections fronts and information graphics for print and online, and the copy editing intern works on local and regional, national and foreign and business copy. We provide direction and feedback, as well as a writing coach who is dedicated to the interns. Globe interns produce every day and finely polish their journalism skills over the summer.

The application deadline is Nov. 1. More information on the program and an application can be accessed from our website: www.bostonglobe.com/newsintern.

Thank you,

 Paula Bouknight
