The Arkansas Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists meets monthly for programs and networking in central Arkansas. Membership is available to all professional journalists in good standing with the national Society of Professional Journalists.
From 1975-1976, chapter member Robert “Bob” McCord served as the national president of SPJ following tours as executive editor of the Arkansas Democrat and associate editor of the Arkansas Gazette. From 2012-2013, board member Sonny Albarado served as SPJ’s national president.
The Arkansas Pro chapter is a member of SPJ’s Region 12. Previous regional directors from the chapter include Meredith Oakley of the Arkansas Democrat (1987-1991), Keith Inman of Mountain View Broadcasting in Batesville (1995-1997), and Sonny Albarado of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (2006-2010).
According to the SPJ publication “100,” the chapter received Outstanding Professional Chapter recognition for a small chapter (i.e. less than 75 members) in 2002. The Northwest Arkansas chapter received similar recognition in 2006. The publication “100″ also notes SPJ marked Little Rock as a National Historic Site in 1966 for John N. Heiskell and the Arkansas Gazette, what was the oldest newspaper west of the Mississippi until its demise in 1991.
Hello! I took out a membership on Thursday after learning of this organization. I don’t have my membership number yet but wish to take advantage of the member rate on the writing competition… What do I do when submitting entries today? I have my confirmation email that says the app and payment info were received.

Did you join SPJ via the spj.org national website? Did you get a receipt from them? If you send the receipt to me, I’ll credit you at the member rate. (spjsonny@gmail.com) BUT I’m not seeing any entries under your name on the contest site.
Greetings!
Does the Arkansas Chapter have any programs/events geared towards high school students? My daughter, who is 14yrs old, has an interest in writing; attends writing camps at UALR; has been published, etc.
Thanks!
I need to change my contact information for SPJ. How do I do that? My email and place of employment has changed.
Tim,
Is this in connection with email you receive from the Diamond Awards contest?
If so, you can send an email to Arkspjcontest@gmail.com or to me at spjsonny@gmail.com.
No, it is related to my SPJ membership information that needs updating.
Thanks.
Tim,
National SPJ should have a way to update your information on its website. If not, you can always email Linda Hall at lindah@hq.spj.org. As for Arkansas SPJ, you can email Sarah DeClerk (sarahdeclerkspj@gmail.com), and she’ll update our mailing list.
